Federal Accountability under ESSA
The Every Student Succeeds Act requires DPI to identify the lowest-performing public schools and schools
with the lowest-performing student groups in Wisconsin.
Wisconsin's plan
for identifying these schools was most recently updated in April 2022.
While the federal accountability system is intended to identify the schools most in need of support and improvement,
DPI reports results for all public schools in the state, including those with no identifications, to facilitate continuous
improvement work for all public schools statewide.
Unlike the School and District Report Cards,
ESSA Accountability only applies to public schools; it does not apply to private schools participating in the Parental Choice Programs. To see the differences between
the School and District Report Cards and ESSA Accountability, please refer to this
accountability crosswalk.
More information about ESSA Accountability and
continuous improvement for schools and districts is available on the DPI website.
Note that the District Summary Report also includes determinations at the Local Educational Agency (i.e. district) level for
the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). More information about IDEA accountability is available in the
WISEdash Public Portal.
